Dual-use Technology Exploitation Cluster (DUTE): increasing awareness of dual-use technology within UK supply chain

A 16-partner collaboration to boost UK economic growth, by enabling companies to draw upon the most cutting-edge dual-use technologies emerging from the civil and defence sector. The Dual-Use Technology Exploitation (DUTE) programme was officially established in September 2015, and will support the creation of more than 140 new jobs and safeguard a further 190 jobs across 15 partners up to 2019.

The programme is led by Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group and supported by Axillium Research in partnership with Saietta Group, Airbus Helicopters, Cranfield University, C-Tech Innovation, Haydale Composite Solutions, Horsebridge Network Systems, KS Composites, NetComposites, Pro2Pro, Rinicom, SHD Composites, Sheffield Hallam University, TWI and XeraCarb.

A total programme value of £10.3m with £6.5m provided via AMSCI grant funding.

OVERVIEW

The need

The Defence Growth Partnership identified a number of market failures in the UK value chain in terms of both competitiveness and market intelligence. It needed to address a specific set of challenges, including:

  • Harnessing a UK community of innovative SMEs, Universities and leading UK Industry partners
  • Identifying the best technologies from adjacent defence and civil sectors and ensuring they are put to dual-use through such a community
  • Supporting and growing this community to ensure it is capable of fully exploiting business growth opportunities from dual-use technology in adjacent sectors
  • Bringing together public and private investors seeking to draw on the very best emerging technologies from both sectors

The solution

Axillium has provided a complete end-to-end innovation support service to the Defence Growth Partnership, and we are actively supporting on the programme today. From the initial gathering and selection of the right high-growth SMEs, Universities and UK Industry partners to carry the programme forward, to the creation and submission of the successful bid to AMSCI which secured £6.4 million. So far, our strategic support and programme management has provided the resource needed to create a powerful UK community, forge stronger links between OEMs, SMEs and technology start-ups and engendering innovation to create new disruptive technologies for customers.

The benefit

By supporting the innovation process from such an early stage in its establishment, we have been able to ensure a smooth and successful collaboration for the DGP and all partners involved. Through our on-going strategic advice and programme support, we have given the partners freedom to focus their resources on core business whilst maximising the potential for innovation. To date, we have enabled the consortium members to deliver 4 separate use-cases covering areas from composites applications in the rail sector to high-security communications networks. All of which will help strengthen and growth both the defence & civilian sectors: creating more than 140 new jobs and safeguarding a further 190 jobs across 15 partners up to 2019.
